Transforming spaces
The development of Willowside Grange began with the transformation of a cluster of historic stables and unused farm buildings, some of which date back 120-150 years. Located in the heart of the village, these structures were once primarily used for agricultural purposes.
This inspired Castlethorpe Homes’ vision for Willowside Grange to honour the character of the village and its historic streetscape while incorporating contemporary finishes. By using authentic Cotswold materials, the development preserves the timeless aesthetic of the area while delivering cutting-edge, sustainable and healthy living spaces with the help of VELUX.
“VELUX were able to influence and improve the design from the very early stages.”
Chris Warner, Managing Director at Castlethorpe Homes
Unlike older, traditional countryside homes that often feature dark rooms and low ceilings, these brand-new farm-style houses maintain the classic aesthetic while introducing plentiful natural light, spaciousness and an undeniable wow factor.
To achieve this, Castlethorpe Homes and VELUX integrated roof windows to draw in ample natural daylight, recognising the value homeowners place on bright, airy spaces. The design process was meticulous, focusing on creating spaces that truly work for modern living.
The five homes in Willowside Grange have been thoughtfully created with three distinct designs to evoke the feel of a classic courtyard, complemented by a central manor house and an array of barn-style homes, all harmoniously integrated into the same development. With a diverse blend of property styles in the development, the partnership successfully maximised the potential of each home, setting a new standard for functionality and innovation.
“With the VELUX roof windows, we’ve been able to create something of a more traditional feel but with extra natural light and modern features you would expect from a new home.”
Chris Warner, Managing Director at Castlethorpe Homes
When approaching the specification for the homes in Willowside Grange, the focus was on incorporating features that add genuine value for their homeowners. Partnering with VELUX brought an additional element to Castlethorpe Home’s holistic approach to sustainability by design. With increased natural light and ventilation, energy use is reduced, dependence on artificial systems is lowered and the overall environmental impact is minimised.
“The roof windows in this project add real value. Whether we’re dealing with the selling agents or customers direct, they can see that we’ve added extra thought into the rooms, the elevation, the amount of natural light and fresh air.”
Chris Warner, Managing Director at Castlethorpe Homes
What Castlethorpe Homes aimed to do was to collaborate with VELUX to introduce more natural light. In the large farmhouse known as The Stirrups, with vaulted ceilings and triple-aspect spaces, while there was already lots of light, the aim was to further enhance this and bring more of the outdoors in. The intention was to create an even more inviting and airy environment, making the most of the surrounding natural beauty. To achieve this, the roof windows were strategically positioned in various orientations to capture light from different directions, maximising natural illumination throughout the day.
While customers often prioritise south-facing elements, this countryside setting provides the perfect opportunity to bring the outdoors in, enhancing views and natural light throughout the home.
Whether in semi-detached cottages or in the large farmhouse, these design choices elevated homes with natural light and a sense of grandeur.
"when we look at our designs, we look at how we can create real wow spaces for people to live in. Part of that is creating light and space.”.
Chris Warner, Managing Director at Castlethorpe Homes
This partnership has pulled together strong reputations and trusted brands, creating a foundation of confidence among homeowners. With both brands sharing similar values, particularly a strong commitment to sustainability, a meaningful and effective project has been delivered.
“VELUX’s attitude towards sustainability, the quality of their products, the service that they provide has really made sure that we have a relationship that is mutually beneficial. Together we can give customers something that’s recognised that elevates our homes.”
