A forward-thinking future in an eco-conscious community

The site in Bleadon, North Somerset, was initially a limestone quarry before it became a site for the manufacturing of concrete products - a process known for its significant carbon footprint.

The potential to Edenstone was obvious and they turned this industrial space into a community of sustainable homes, leaving behind a carbon-intensive past with a future grounded in environmental responsibility.

The Eden Green development consists of 42 purpose-built, energy-efficient family homes. This project serves as a powerful example of how industrial sites can be revitalised to meet modern demands for eco-conscious living with a forward-thinking future.

“With the history of the site and the previous uses, we wanted to turn this around and come from a different approach and create a sustainable, light, airy and comfortable place to live.”

Daylight driven design

The thought process behind enhancing daylight within the space focused on maximising both the quantity and quality of natural light. Originally designed with windows and bifold doors, working alongside VELUX, a new perspective was introduced and the idea to elevate the space by introducing additional light, particularly in areas like stairwells and other transitional spaces was born. The roof windows significantly enhanced the functionality as well as the aesthetics of spaces that can often be overlooked.

The decision to choose VELUX roof windows was led by their ability to seamlessly integrate with a single-storey design, allowing for the introduction of the top light and a unique type of illumination. The roof windows enhanced the overall experience, offering an additional depth and dimension that elevated the space.

“The idea behind bringing daylight into our homes is that a well-lit room feels more spacious, open and airy. VELUX windows enhance this experience, something facade windows and bifold doors can’t achieve."

Maximising comfort with effective ventilation

In kitchen spaces, where cooking odours and other common smells tend to gather, roof windows play a crucial role in improving ventilation. As building regulations continue to emphasise the importance of ventilation, this feature has become increasingly essential. The positive feedback Edenstone has received from homeowners has been truly encouraging, contributing to the overall appeal and marketability of Eden Green’s homes, which has been a valuable asset for their sales team.

“VELUX provided CGIs of our various house types, and right away, we saw how they would create more desirable, sellable homes and truly transform the space.”

Partnership with a shared commitment

VELUX have proven to be an ideal collaborator due to quick, detailed responses. As technical queries become more complex, particularly with the growing demand from building control and other regulatory bodies, the partnership has ensured the necessary support and insights are provided.

The partnership with VELUX also ensured access to valuable information on how to operate, maintain and maximise the performance of the windows, which provided peace of mind and ease of use. The introduction of top light added a new layer of sophistication, creating a more dynamic and inviting environment, which elevated the functionality and appeal.

“The initial feedback we've had from customers is all very positive and it’s definitely helped with the saleability of Eden’s Green.”
