Overcoming Issues To Move A Historic Site Forward

Visionary developers The VerdeGO Group bought part of a historic ordinance yard in Portsmouth, creating 9 ultra-modern, forward-looking houses set between Grade 2 listed walls.

After attempting twice before when talking to larger developers, Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust turned to The VerdeGO Group for an alternative, modular approach to redeveloping Priddy’s Hard peninsula. . After consultation between a number of parties including planners, Historic England, ecologists and architects, a scheme of 30 houses was agreed, including the renovation of a Grade Two listed building.

We want to offer excellent build quality, sustainable, low energy developments combined with luxurious finishes, and high-quality design. The challenge was to build with as little an impact on the environment as possible, not only during the construction process, but also during the length of their existence.

Where Style And Sustainability Meet

The idea behind the developments was to create self-sufficient units, integrating battery storage packs, photovoltaic panels, and infrared heating without any harming visual impact, given that they were in a historic conservation area.

Combining GSE’s ultra-thin 3mm PV panels with Sandtoft tiles, VELUX roof windows and Wonderwall’s AI light and heat control systems, they created a very clean-looking flat system that works in a listed building context or a conservation area.

WE USED THE VELUX SOLAR INTEGRATOR, COMBINING VELUX ROOF WINDOWS AND GSE PV SOLAR PANELS ON OUR AWARD-WINNING DEVELOPMENT. THE FLASHING ALLOWING BOTH PRODUCTS TO BE INSTALLED SIDE BY SIDE, HAS CREATED A SEAMLESS INTEGRATION WHICH LOOKS GREAT. BEING ABLE TO COMBINE THE BENEFIT OF BRINGING DAYLIGHT THROUGH THE ROOF, WHILST SUPPORTING NET ZERO AMBITIONS THROUGH THE USE OF RENEWABLE TECHNOLOGIES, REALLY HELPS US CREATE SUSTAINABLE, LOW-ENERGY HOMES.

Delivering On Daylight

Daylight is essential when we consider that we spend on average 90% of our time indoors, so the homes we live in do not just need to be good, they need to create a real sense of wellbeing.

The VELUX daylight design service provided The VerdeGO Group with free expertise and support when it came to evaluating project-specific and standard house needs. The service focuses on helping housebuilders differentiate the environment through controlled daylight conditions and indoor comfort. Perfect for prospective purchasers who will be enamoured taken with the look and style of the daylight touch.

THE DAYLIGHT DESIGN SERVICE HIGHLIGHTED THE IMPORTANCE OF BRINGING AS MUCH LIGHT INTO THE BUILDING AS POSSIBLE. AND THE DAYLIGHT SURVEYS THAT VELUX UNDERTOOK REALLY BROUGHT HOME TO ME THE DIFFERENCE IT MAKES. ON OTHER BUILDINGS THAT WE’RE DEVELOPING, I'VE TAKEN THESE PLANS THAT GOT PLANNING PERMISSION, AND I'VE TOTALLY CHANGED THE BUILDING ACCESS POINT AROUND TO ADD MORE LIGHT. WHAT WE DISCOVERED WAS THAT VELUX IS NOT JUST A PRODUCT SUPPLIER. THERE'S A PARTNERSHIP THAT GOES THROUGH ALL THE WAY FROM PRE CONCEPT THROUGH PRE DESIGN, THROUGH INSTALLATION AND FINISH.
